Natural Cat Litter Options To Consider

by Victor James

Cat litter management is perhaps one of the biggest challenges for cat owners. Not only do you have to find a type of litter that your cat is comfortable using, but you also have to contend with dust clouds, odors, and scooping in most cases. Unfortunately, many of the cat litter options on the market are synthetic materials. If you want a more natural solution, you might feel as though your options are limited. There are a few things that you should consider, though.

Crushed Walnut Shells

Although some crushed nut shells might be toxic to your cats, walnut shells are perfectly safe. Crushed walnut shells work well as a natural cat litter solution because it clumps well, and the underlying nutty smell masks some of the odors. However, you might find that when it gets wet, it starts to stick to your kitty's paws, leaving a mess in the house.

Dried Corn

Dried corn litter is another natural solution that many cats easily adapt to. Like the walnut shells, the natural smell of the corn helps to keep litter box odors at bay. It can get messy, though. The corn litter will track easily out of the box, so be prepared for more frequent cleaning up to keep the mess down.

Grass

Many cat owners overlook one of the most natural litter box solutions that there is. Create a litter box with soil and grass for your cat to use. Most cats will easily use grass in a litter box because it resembles a natural environment. Unfortunately, they cannot effectively cover their waste, so you might deal with more odors. Not only that, but litter boxes with grass are often lighter weight, which means that heavier cats might struggle to use the box without tipping it over or might sink into the soil.

Wood Shavings or Pellets

Wood shavings are a popular choice for pet owners with smaller pets, such as guinea pigs. They work equally well as a litter box solution, but you should be selective about the type of wood that the shavings are from. Avoid any pine source to protect your cats from toxins.

Wood pellets are also popular. They are a compressed version of wood shavings, though you might find the pellet size makes it hard to scoop the box. The pellets might disintegrate when they get wet, which makes it hard to clean up urine. Instead, plan to dump and replace the box regularly to keep the odors down and keep the box clean for your cats.

These are just a few of the most popular natural solutions for cat litter. Consider your cat's personality and preferences as you choose the right one for them.
